Second Annual Meeting: Call for Proposals
Deadline for Expressions of Interest: October 1st, 2014
Submissions are invited for the Second Annual Meeting of SRPoiSE, to be held at Michigan State University Detroit Center, March 27- 28, 2015. Limited travel support is available. Thi s conference seeks to convene presentations, panels, and discussions that serve to promote better understanding of the opportunities and barriers for improving the capacity of philosophers of all specializations to collaborate and engage with scientists, engineers, policy-makers, and a wide range of publics to foster epistemically and ethically responsible scientific and technological research and policy-making. The meeting will be structured so as to encourage dialogue and catalyze future collaborations in this important area of research and practice. The meeting welcomes graduate students, postdocs, and faculty who are already doing this work or who wish to do this work in the future and are looking to explore ways to do so.
Presentations and discussions will be on:
Any philosophical work done in collaboration or engagement with scientists, engineers, policy-makers, and a wide range of publics to foster epistemically and ethically responsible scientific and technological research.
Any philosophical work that addresses complex social and environmental problems and fosters the ability of researchers in science and engineering to do so as well.
Understanding and ameliorating conceptual and institutional barriers to collaborative research across these groups.
Cultivating strategies for training graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty on how to effectively collaborate across a variety of domains.
Topics may include the following issues:
- Trust in Science/Engineering,
- The Nature of Interdisciplinarity and Interdisciplinary Collaboration,
- Theories of Expertise,
- Bias/Industry Sponsored Research,
- Coupled Ethical-Epistemic Issues,
- Participatory Action Research,
- Science/Engineering and Justice,
- The Science/Engineering and Policy Nexus,
- Science/Engineering and Democracy,
- Broader Impacts,
- STEM Outreach and Education (including opportunities to blend STEM and philosophy)
The topics reflect the goals of SRPoiSE, which is a relatively new international consortium supporting high-quality philosophical work related to science and engineering that contributes to public welfare and collective well-being. (See our website, www.srpoise.org
, for more information, and to apply to become a member.)
The meeting will take the format of a deliberative congress, allowing everyone to present their work and/or share working ideas to the whole group. The meeting will include visits and talks about projects happening in Detroit that connect society with science and engineering.
