Title: Interacting with Media: Investigations into Students' Unprompted Quantitative and Statistical Reasoning
Abstract: Quantitative and statistical literacy are readily discussed as necessary for participation in our data-drenched society. For this talk, I will discuss my practicum study and continuing work with MSU's Learning HUB, where I have interviewed and surveyed MTH 101 and 102 students to examine--in rather unprompted ways--how they reason with various media sources. Preliminary results suggest that prior knowledge and pre-existing biases serve as nontrivial barriers to the types of reasoning desired for quantitative and statistical literacy.
