Research as a tool to improve the teaching and learning of quantum mechanics

My research focuses on investigating how students learn quantum mechanics. By determining what concepts students find the most challenging, we can develop targeted instructional tools that can be used to enhance student understanding. In this talk I will describe an investigation into how students think about superposition in quantum mechanics and the tools we developed to improve instruction. In addition, I will discuss some of the unique challenging facing physics education research in quantum mechanics and some preliminary research that aims to address these challenges.
