Role of multiple representations in physics problem solving
Alex Maries, University of Cincinnati, mariesau@ucmail.uc.edu

In this seminar, I will discuss several research findings pertaining to the impact of using representations in physics problem solving and provide recommendations for instruction. I will also discuss research results on the extent to which teaching assistants are familiar with common introductory student difficulties with graphical representations of motion and how this study was extended to the context of the Force Concept Inventory. For each study presented, I will discuss plans to extend it at ECU and, where appropriate, how collaborations with other MSITE faculty can be formed. I will also discuss plans for obtaining external grant funding and my experience with and plans for improving and extending science teacher preparation both for pre-service and in-service teachers.
