Keller and Bloom both advocated for Mastery Learning in the 1960’s, and significant work throughout the 1980’s showed their methods could have significant positive results on student learning and attitudes. Inspired by this work, we have developed online activities that allow to engage in Mastery-Style learning of introductory physics. Initial clinical studies showed this format was significantly better than our standard homework format. However, getting similar results in a classroom environment has been more difficult. These results have provided important feedback on requirements for a successful implementation, and informed our process for creating a complete set of mastery inspired activities for introductory physics.
