Using Visual Networks to Map the Systems Thinking Literature

Many curriculum reports have advocated for the inclusion of the systems education in biology, but accurately identifying systems ideas across different knowledge domains can prove challenging. To overcome this challenge, we adapted a method to identify and visualize the key communities and publications of “systems thinking,” a concept that spans multiple disciplines. Using co-citation networks and content analysis as an alternative literature review, we harness the power of large bibliographic databases to connect concepts across disparate fields in order to, ultimately, inform the creation of a systems thinking framework for teaching and learning in undergraduate biology.
