212 North Kedzie - Michigan State University

Julia Reynolds, an assistant professor at Duke University, will be joining the CREATE CRCSTL Seminar, Dr. Reynolds will be talking about despite substantial evidence that writing can be an effective tool to promote student learning and engagement, writing-to-learn practices are still not widely implemented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines, particularly at research universities.  Two major deterrents to progress are the lack of community of science faculty committed to unertaking and applying the necessary pedagogical research, and the bsence of a conceptual framwork to systematically guide study designs and integrate findings. This talk focuses both on the research that supports the claims that writing improves science learning, as well as pracitcal tips for instructors who want to implement writing in their courses.
