Title: Productive Research Relationships: Conducting Interdisciplinary Research
Abstract: In this presentation, we share considerations and advice for conducting interdisciplinary research, including grant-writing and writing for publication. We will discuss our ongoing work on the SOLID Start Project (Science, Oral Language, and Literacy Development from the Start of School) as an exemplar of a productive, interdisciplinary multi-year research partnership. This project has been funded by The CREATE for STEM Institute, The Spencer Foundation, and the National Science Foundation.
Bios: Dr. Tanya Wright is an Associate Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Teacher Education. As a former kindergarten teacher, her research and teaching focus on curriculum and instruction in language and literacy, specifically instructional practices that promote oral language, vocabulary, and knowledge development for young children. Wright is co-author of several books for teachers and parents including, All About Words: Increasing Vocabulary in the Common Core Classroom PreK-2. Her work has also been published in journals such as American Educator, The Elementary School Journal, The Reading Teacher, Reading and Writing, and Reading Research Quarterly.
Dr. Amelia Wenk Gotwals is an Associate Professor of Science Education in the Department of Teacher Education. As a former middle and high school science teacher, her research interests include exploring the ways that students engage in science practices and with core ideas in science, the ways that curricular and assessment materials interact with teacher instruction to support this learning, and students’ science learning progressions. Gotwals has been a PI on various projects (many of which were NSF-funded, in addition to the current SOLID Start project) related to learning progressions, curriculum and assessment development, and professional development programs.
