Improving Student Learning and Skill Development in the Undergraduate Physics Laboratory Curriculum

In November 2014, the AAPT Executive Board officially endorsed the "AAPT Recommendations for the Undergraduate Laboratory Curriculum." These recommendation include objectives, experiences, and learning outcomes for the introductory and advanced (i.e. beyond first year) labs that "foster the development of many key 21st century skills and competencies." This talk will provide an overview of the AAPT Recommendations as well as examples of implementing the recommendations in the lab, especially at the introductory level. It will also address the need for further physics education research and assessment development for laboratory courses and the laboratory curriculum.
