CREATE is delighted to announce that Dr. Mark Urban-Lurain has been added to a prestigious group of MSU faculty who have been named American Association for the Advancement of Science fellows. He has been named a fellow in education for his contributions to the field. Urban-Lurain's research focus has been on utilizing technology in order to assess student learning, with the goal of improving undergraduate STEM education.

“With a 40% dropout rate in STEM, improving undergraduate STEM education is crucial to advancing science,” Urban-Lurain said. “I am honored that my commitment to improving undergraduate STEM education has been recognized by the AAAS Council.”

Before retiring, Mark was the former director of the Automated Analysis of Constructed Responses (AACR) project within the CREATE for STEM Institute.

Urban-Lurain is one of nine Spartans to be honored with a 2021 AAAS Fellows award, tying the group of awardees in 2011 in terms of MSU faculty honored in one year. There are 564 new fellows from around the world being installed as 2021 recipients, in fields spanning engineering, research, teaching, science and administration. AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and being honored as a Fellow is among science's top distinctions.

Congratulations to Dr. Urban-Lurain for his many contributions to STEM education!
