Assessing Learning Progressions

Assessing Learning Progressions (ALPs) is a National Science Foundation funded project aimed at helping researchers of learning progressions bridge the gap between the development of hypothetical learning progressions and the use of assessment to study and validate them. Learning progressions have the potential to transform how we construe learning, instruction, and assessment in science. Rather than considering learning as occurring in a single time period (duration of an instructional unit), learning progressions view learning as developing across extended periods of time (over multiple grades). In principle, learning progressions provide a framework for making decisions about what to teach, when and how to teach it, and what we can expect that students be able to do at different points along the progression.
