“E” Stands for Excellence
The CREATE for STEM Institute has received word that the Science Peer Review Panel of Achieve.org has reviewed Unit 1 of the Interactions curriculum and has awarded it the highest rating, an “E: Example of high-quality NGSS design.” In fact, Interactions is the first curriculum unit reviewed by Achieve to earn this rating. The Interactions unit will be awarded an NGSS Design badge to display on its materials and on the CREATE website. Achieve has developed its digital badge to provide an easy way for educators to be assured that a unit has been objectively reviewed and found to be of high quality.
Achieve is in the final stages of the badge development, and plans to showcase the Interactions unit as the first awardee as they introduce the badge. In the meantime, Achieve has posted the Interactions unit on its “Quality Examples of Science Lessons and Units” webpage. CREATE plans to submit 3 additional units from Interactions for review as well.
Interactions is a yearlong 9th-grade physical science curriculum and teacher support system developed at CREATE through a grant from the National Science Foundation [DRL-1232388]. Partners included the Concord Consortium and the University of Michigan. Teachers in several districts in Michigan were involved in the development and testing of the materials, which then underwent an effectiveness study in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
