Dr. Melanie Cooper elected to National Academy of Education

Congratulation to Melanie Cooper, whose groundbreaking research is transforming how chemistry is taught at MSU and beyond, has been inducted as one of the 14 new members of the academy.

She joins an esteemed group of internationally recognized education leaders and scholars from institutions like the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, and Boston’s Museum of Science.

“We are delighted to welcome these diverse and trailblazing education leaders,” said Carol Lee, academy president. “Their guidance will help expand our research and professional development endeavors.”

Cooper’s membership holds special significance as she is one of the few members with a background in discipline-based education research (DBER). DBER specialists focus on innovating and improving teaching methods in STEM fields.

“It feels important to be honored for this work,” Cooper said. “We’re a relatively new field, and the academy's invitation feels like a door opening toward greater recognition.”
