Dr. Clausell Mathis is an assistant professor at Michigan State University with a joint appointment in Lyman Briggs College and the Department of Teacher Education. He teaches physics and the senior capstone course at Lyman Briggs College. His research incorporates culture-based equitable approaches in the classroom, leveraging students' cultural resources to connect with physics phenomena. Dr. Mathis earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction - Science Education from Florida State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Physics Education Group at the University of Washington, Seattle Physics Education Group. Before his Ph.D., he worked as a high school physics teacher, and community college physics professor, and conducted research in cellular and molecular biophysics.
Dr. Mathis's research centers on understanding how physics teachers can effectively incorporate culture-based pedagogical approaches into their instruction. His research projects include developing physics curricula that utilize students' cultural resources to enhance learning, examining physics teacher identity and its impact on equity in teaching, and investigating student sense-making processes and how cultural resources can influence understanding.
