As MSU collaborators on the Learning of the competencies of effective climate change mitigation and adaptation in the education system (ClimComp) project, funded by the Academy of Science Finland (2021-2024), Dr. Joe Krajcik and Dr. Barbara Schneider were invited guests and presenters at a ClimComp consortium meeting held at the University of Helsinki, Finland, on August 23, 2022.
The Research Team includes the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research, University of Helsinki; Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki; and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
The study explores the essential competencies required for effectively addressing climate change and how these skills can be taught and learned within the education system. It emphasizes the need for climate expertise across all societal sectors and suggests that optimal learning opportunities can be achieved through collaboration with cutting-edge research, the education system, and society at large. The study involves atmospheric scientists, climate modellers, educational scientists, and psychologists to examine effective learning moments in project-based learning, research-practice partnerships, and online environments for youth. Based on the findings, the study proposes systemic changes to the education system to enhance the teaching of climate competencies and develop new tools for youth education in this area.
