Krajcik appointed as international expert for PISA 2025

Joe Krajcik, Director of the CREATE for STEM Institute and a Lappan-Phillips Professor of Science Education at Michigan State University, has been selected to participate as an international expert for PISA 2025.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) developed the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) initiative in 2000 in order to test the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. PISA 2025 is taking place at Oxford University from November 23-25, 2025.

Previous PISA frameworks for science assessment defined 'scientific literacy' as the primary educational goal and central concept. The PISA 2025 framework, however, adopts a broader perspective. It now emphasizes the general outcomes of science education, aligning the science framework with those for mathematics and reading, rather than focusing solely on 'science literacy.'

In the development of the 2025 framework, two earlier competencies—‘Evaluate and design scientific enquiry’ and ‘Interpret data and evidence scientifically’—have been combined into one: ‘Construct and evaluate designs for scientific enquiry and interpret scientific data and evidence critically.’ This adjustment highlights the importance of evaluating designs, as few adults are likely to design experiments, and recognizes that both competencies are integral to the enquiry process.
