Congratulations to Kristen Bieda, CREATE for STEM's Associate Director of Mathematics, who has been named permanent chair of MSU's Department of Teacher Education, effective July 1, 2026!
Bieda had been interim chair since 2024. During that time she helped lead work like the Community Teachers initiative, a partnership in Grand Rapids, and the Spartan Teachers Promise forgivable loan program.
Some highlights:
- Faculty member in the MSU College of Education since 2008; full professor since 2023
- Research on reasoning and proof in middle and secondary math classrooms, with a focus on better teacher education, curriculum and professional development
- Past president of the Michigan Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (2022–2025)
- Former middle school, high school and college math teacher
"We are known for doing things differently," Bieda said of the department. "Our department is known for being audacious."
