Congratulations to Dr. Julie Libarkin on her recent three-year NSF award of $398,264 for the"Drawing-to-Assess: Reliability and Validity of Drawing Analysis" research study.
This Level 1 project will explore different ways of evaluating student drawings to see how reliable and effective they are for assessing student learning. While “drawing-to-learn” is commonly used to help students understand concepts, much less is known about using drawings as a way to assess students’ cognitive and affective learning.
The study will collect drawings from students across different disciplines at MSU. Researchers will then compare five approaches for evaluating the drawings: rubric scoring, semiotic analytics, manual grouping, factor analysis, and AI analysis. The goal is to build a strong foundation for using drawings as an alternative to more traditional assessment methods.
