ABSTRACT of Dr. Malcom's talk:
How do we transform our courses and curricula in ways that support learning by all? We need to think systemically rather than just providing support to enable students to survive current practices. What is it about current practice that needs to change? Discipline-based education research points out changes needed within course pedagogy that could yield better results for all learners. Systemic reform points to required changes within the larger infrastructure of the institution, such as skills development for graduate students, recruitment and assessment of future faculty, changes in the incentive structure of promotion and tenure, and monitoring and evaluation of departmental effectiveness. This presentation will explore the many pathways that must converge to support equity-centered teaching and learning.
