You won't want to miss the next installment of our Community Talks - AI Conversations next Tuesday, at 12:30pm in the CREATE seminar space.
The topic of discussion that will be facilitated by Rachel Henderson (Physics Education Researcher, Department of Physics & Astronomy) and Melanie Cooper (Chemistry Education Researcher, Department of Chemistry) will invite participants to step back from questions of AI detection and policy enforcement to examine the learning processes they value most and how those processes are supported through course design. Through structured small-group and whole-group discussions, we will reflect on the kinds of thinking, reasoning, problem solving, and scientific practices we expect students to develop in our courses, as well as which aspects of learning should remain central human activities even when AI tools are readily available. We will then explore how classroom structures, assessment practices, and instructor communication either encourage or discourage reliance on generative AI and consider ways to better align course design with desired learning outcomes.
